Clinical work

The multidisciplinary pain team members at The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals consist of six pain consultants, a post-CCT fellow, advanced pain trainees, a clinical psychologist, and a large nursing team.  The pain service at Barts Health NHS Trust accepts patients from a wide catchment area in east London and further afield, with approximately 1050 new patients seen annually.

Clinical services offered include multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary pain clinics, and pain management programmes.  Specialist clinics include a headache clinic, abdominal pain clinic and complex opioid clinic.

As of April 2017, we offer quantitative sensory testing as a clinical service in the diagnosis of neuropathic pain.

A wide range of highly-specialised interventional pain procedures are carried out in addition to spinal injections and radiofrequency denervation, including spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, multifidus stimulation, occipital nerve stimulation, and sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation.

The pain consultants at Barts Health NHS Trust are all Fellows of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in the UK, and have an active research interest alongside their clinical work.
